The Blues ended Manchester United’s 19-game unbeaten run with a 3-1 victory at Wembley on Sunday.
Manchester United were believed to be favourites for this game as no one gave Chelsea a chance. However, Chelsea bossed the match from start to finish and thoroughly deserved to go through to meet Arsenal in the final.
Speaking before the game, Lampard admitted that he had learnt his mistakes from the three previous defeats against United and would prepare his team for this game differently – which he rightly did.
In previous games, Chelsea bossed possession against United but were always hit on the break. The Blues would play well but end up losing the game.
However, it’s been thrice beaten and three times shy for Lampard, but for the fourth time, he was the wiser one.
The game at Anfield was won on the bench, with Frank Lampard opting for a three at the back system, this time, he included Cesar Azpilicueta on the right side of defence, reminding us of the glorious Antonio Conte era.
Chelsea were well shaped to not only defend, but attack as well, but this time Frank Lampard was more keen on getting his defence right. If not for the overzealous tackle from Callum Hudson-Odoi in the penalty box, it would have been a clean sheet for Chelsea.
United had been on an unbeaten run since February, and their attacking threat has been one of the best in the league, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood tearing teams apart for fun.
Without N’Golo Kante and a weak Chelsea defence, Solskjaer must have been preparing his side for another onslaught. But the Blues boss surprised him, and 3-4-3 was the least thing Solskjaer expected.
