Chelsea to sign experienced German international midfielder on three-year deal

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign German international midfielder Melanie Leupolz according to the club’s official website.

The 25-year-old former UEFA Women’s EURO winner will join The Blues on 1 July after her contract has expired with current club Bayern Munich where she has been enjoying a role as club captain.

It has been reported that Leupolz has agreed to sign a three-year deal at Kingsmeadow which will see her initially stay with new club Chelsea until the end of the 2022/2023 season.

The midfielder has spent her entire career to date playing in her homeland. Leupolz began her senior career with SC Freiburg where she spent four years before joining current club Bayern Munich in 2014. The player moves to the FA Women’s Super League with two Bundesliga Frauen league titles to her name.

Leupolz has also helped Bayern Munich to second place in each of the last three seasons with rivals VfL Wolfsburg having dominated the German game in recent years.

It is thought that Leupolz had other contract offers on the table but opted to join Emma Hayes’ multi-national Chelsea side with the club poised for a return to European competition next season.

The midfielder becomes Chelsea’s first signing of the summer and she will undoubtedly be a popular figure with the club’s fanbase.
