Chelsea top defender set to return to Chelsea after disappointing loan

Chelsea Defender Ethan Ampadu is set to return to Chelsea this summer after an extremely disappointing loan at RB Leipzig.

After a couple of seasons mainly spent sitting on the bench at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were hoping that the youngster could play more regularly at a team known for preferring younger players.

But in the end he featured even less for them than he would have done for Frank Lampard’s young Blues, a bitterly disappointing outcome both for Ethan and for Chelsea.

SI.com have quotes from the German side explaining why the 19 year old didn’t play much, and where we can expect him to be next season:

“We have not made our clear decision for Ampadu, but the chances of returning to Chelsea are very high,” Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche said.

“This season he missed a lot of matches because of his injuries. We also do not have the option to purchase.”

After all that, it will be considered a major failing of the Chelsea loan co-ordinators that they didn’t pick a club more likely to use Ethan, or at least add a break clause after 6 months to the loan.
