CONFIRMED: UEFA makes final decision on Real Madrid vs Chelsea Champions League semi-final clash
The Champions League semi-final clash between Chelsea and Real Madrid was at risk of being cancelled, after the involvement of the two clubs in the European Super League.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin had warned that there was a ‘small possibility’ that next week’s Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Chelsea may not go ahead as punishment for their role in the European Super League.
The European football governing body had a meeting today to discuss the possibilities of the Champions League semi-final clash and possible sanctions, having had extensive talks with their legal team.
Reports from Spain have confirmed that following the meeting on Friday, UEFA have decided that they do not have the power to expel Real Madrid from the current Champions League competition due to legal and television rights issues.
However, UEFA who seem aggrieved with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over the Super League project, is still considering a future punishment for Real Madrid if the club continue their push to create a European Super League.
So, the verdict has been given that the semi-final clash between Real Madrid and Chelsea will still go on as planned, with the first leg taking place on Tuesday next week in Spain.
