David Luiz disagrees with Maurizio Sarri and fires warning to Liverpool

David Luiz believes Chelsea are firmly in the title race despite lagging 11 points behind current leaders Liverpool.

Maurizio Sarri’s side can cut that gap to eight points with a win over out of sorts Leicester at Stamford Bridge this afternoon, but the Italian has regularly argued his side is not yet equipped to challenge current champions Manchester City, as well as Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Luiz, meanwhile, who scored in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over City earlier this month, believes his teammates are capable of hauling in the top two with over half the season still remaining.

He said: ‘Of course the boss tries to give us the maths and to give us one direction to follow and we trying to get the points to be there and fighting for the title not just for the top four.

’ Pushed on whether he thought it was realistic for Chelsea to win the title in Sarri’s first season in charge, Luiz replied: ‘Yes, I think so but with humility, with our feet on the ground, thinking step by step.

‘Of course we lost some points and it could be better for us at the moment but everybody knows in this league everybody can win against everybody.

‘It’s not my first Premier League [season] so I know anything can happen.’
