Does this Chelsea defender have a future at the club beyond the summer?

Ethan Ampadu is currently out on loan at RB Leipzig from Premier League side Chelsea but there are rumours he might have no future at Stamford Bridge next season.

The centre-back was sent out to Germany on a season-long loan deal in hopes that the youngster can get some much-needed experience in the senior side. But so far, the 19-year-old has played in only three Bundesliga games for Leipzig meaning there’s very little chance that he will remain in Germany for one more year.

And there are now fears that the player might not be welcomed at Chelsea as well since the Blues are preparing to bring in a number of new players during the summer.

Chelsea did not sign any new players during the past two transfer windows meaning they will spend large amounts of cash this time around and strengthening the defensive line remains one of the priorities for Frank Lampard. So in such a scenario, Ethan Ampadu might not even find a place in the first-team squad next season. And here’s what the 19-year-old say thinks about this possibility.

Ampadu said via the Evening Standard: “In our sport, most people progress on talent and hard work — and that’s what I see at Chelsea.

“Honestly, I pay no attention to the rumours [of big spending]. Sorry if that’s a boring answer but I’m just concentrating on my football and trying to get better every day.

“I followed Chelsea as a young fan until I joined the club as a player aged 16.

“From that point, I thought only about its future and that’s all I am concerned about. It’s my club, always has been and it will always be my home in football.”

Can Ethan Ampadu find a place at Chelsea?
Chelsea have historically dealt with their youngsters really poorly so if we were to base our hypotheses on preceding records, we would say Ethan Ampadu would be allowed to leave in the summer or sent out on loan on again.

But this season, Frank Lampard seems to have rested his confidence on his young detachment and players like Mason Mount, Reece James and now Billy Gilmour have all passed the test with flying colours. So looking at this, there’s every chance the manager can look to give an opportunity to Ethan Ampadu for the first half of next season.
