Ex-Chelsea star Mikel Obi makes sensational coronavirus decision

Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel has departed Trabzonspor just days after criticising the Turkish football authorities over their failure to suspend the Turkish league despite the spread of coronavirus.

The 32 year old midfielder only joined Trabzonspor as a free agent last summer but has now cancelled his contract with the Turkish club.

Mikel didn’t feel comfortable playing football amid the spread of coronavirus and will give up his remaining wages in order to become a free agent.

Last Saturday, Mikel criticised the Turkish football authorities for refusing to suspend the league despite the spread of the virus.

His statement read: “There is more to life than football. I do not feel comfortable and don’t want to play football in this situation.

Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones at this critical time. Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times.”

Mikel made a total of 24 appearances in all competitions for Trabzonspor.
