Fresh Reports: Forget Cavani, Dembele or Piatek as Chelsea in talks to sign Serie A goal-machine

Fresh reports have again claimed Chelsea are in talks to sign Napoli striker Dries Mertens.

Despite their decent start to the new season and the fact they have some of the best creative players in the Premier League, with the likes of Willian, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Mason Mount just a few names to be mentioned, there is a lot of speculation about who Frank Lampard could sign.

The Blues legend and former England International has been unable to sign any players during his first few months of his time back at Chelsea due to their transfer ban, but that was overturned and he is now able to sign players to help improve the side. And that has led to speculation in the media claiming that Chelsea are closing in on a deal for the impressive Moussa Dembele, who is being chased by all the top clubs in the world after another impressive start to the new season.

Some reports in the media even suggested that he is keen on a move to the Premier League, with the stumbling block becoming the valuation of the player, with Lyon reportedly keen to nail down £85 million for their star man, a fee that Chelsea do not want to pay.

However, the French side have come out in recent days and stated that they have no desire to let the young man leave this transfer window, meaning Chelsea will have to turn their attentions elsewhere, with reports on the Di Marzio website claim the Blues are closing in on Mertens.

The Belgian is also set to become a free agent at the end of the season after seven years in Naples and he’s already said to be in talks with the Blues about a possible move to Stamford Bridge this month for a small fee.

Mertens may not be the most powerful of strikers in Europe and is certainly a different type of player to Giroud and Tammy Abraham, but he would fit into the Blues system perfectly as he is a very adaptable forward. His goal-scoring record is very impressive and he he has the experience to cope with even the toughest of challenges here in the Premier League.
