Giroud exit ready to bring £40 million Belgium international striker to Chelsea before Friday

With Olivier Giroud close to leaving Chelsea for Inter Milan, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen on signing a replacement before the January transfer window closes on Friday.

Chelsea have been linked with experienced Belgium frontman Dries Mertens and according to ESPN.

Napoli have asked the Blues to pay £40 million for the 32 year old, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Napoli’s asking price for Mertens means completing a deal would make him the second-most expensive signing over the age of 32.

Lampard hinted recently that he was keen to bring in a new striker before Friday but Chelsea aren’t willing to meet Napoli’s asking price for Mertens.

The report also claims Mertens isn’t willing to leave Napoli this month.

It is believed Chelsea could renew interest in signing Mertens at the end of the season.
