Lampard finally explains why he almost never gave a chance for Pulisic at the start of the season

Frank Lampard has defended his handling of Christian Pulisic, speaking after the American’s show-stealing performance against Burnley.

As Pulisic has staked his claim to become a regular starter, his boss argues the player needed some rest as he had almost none before the season started.

“He had a week’s break this summer,” Lampard told Sky Sports.

“He arrived for a big price and wanted to come straight back in but at the same time why am I going to throw him in? So I have to do it in the right way and get the best out of him. I’m delighted for him.”

Chelsea managed to defeat Burnley quite convincingly, despite the Clarets’ formidable run of results at home: the only team to defeat them at Turf Moor were Liverpool.

“This is a really tough place to go and the way we controlled the game, our midfield combinations and movement, was beautiful to watch.

I really enjoyed watching them today.”
