Lampard reveals what he loves about the 4-3-3 formation

Since the start of the season, Frank Lampard has mostly set Chelsea up in a 4-2-3-1 system, as he decided to play with a double pivot in midfield.

However, in the second half against Krasnodar, in the Champions League tie away at Russia, Lampard switched to a 4-3-3 system, and the attack became rampant.

Lampard decided to roll out the 4-3-3 from the start against Burnley, and it was to devastating effect, as the Blues were on fire against Sean Dyche’s side.

With N’Golo Kante sitting in front of the defence, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz played as two No. eights, and the midfield has so much fluidity.

Explaining what he liked about the 4-3-3 system, Lampard said: “I liked the balance of the midfield.

“N’Golo Kante was fantastic behind Mason and Kai, and there was a fluidity about it where they could drop out and get on the ball in deeper areas. There was a lot of energy in that midfield as well as quality.

“We have played slightly differently in the last couple of games, and there have been a lot of positives. It doesn’t mean we can’t change back, but it’s great to see what it did for Kai and for Mason. It brought the best attributes out of what people would regard as really offensive players.”
