Liverpool legend backs Timo Werner to prove Liverpool wrong at Chelsea

The Bundesliga top striker Timo Werner is close to being a Chelsea player after the Blues agreed to pay his £49 million release clause. The 24 year old striker has also been offered a five year contract worth £200,000 a week by the Blues.

According to Sport Bild’s head of football Christian Falk, Werner rejected three clubs in favour of joining Chelsea this summer, after Chelsea boss Frank Lampard convinced him that he would play an important role at the club.

Meanwhile, Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has told Werner to prove Liverpool were wrong to not have signed him.

“Meanwhile at Liverpool, who is going to replace. He’s a really good player, but we don’t know right now, is he better than [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino, [Mohamed] Salah?” said Redknapp. “It’s one of the best front three in the world right now so he doesn’t want to go somewhere and be a number two or a sub.

“Will they regret it? You don’t know but that is what he has got to do. “He has got to make Liverpool regret that decision, or at least make them think, ‘I wish we had signed him!’”

The former Reds midfielder went on to reveal that the signing of Werner could have upset the balance at Liverpool. “For Liverpool, they have got to look at it and think, if you bring someone like him in it could upset the balance of them and maybe they might think, ‘Would it be worth the risk to bring in another player?’

“They have three top-class players who don’t get many injuries, why risk upsetting balance.”
