Two Mendy’s strengths which are Kepa’s weaknesses finally revealed!

Chelsea confirmed the signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes on Thursday for a fee believed to be around £22million.

The 28-year-old, who was hardly a household name before he was linked to the Blues, helped Rennes finish third and secure Champions League football last season.

Chelsea broke the record for a goalkeeper when we signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2018 but the Spaniard has failed to impress at the Bridge.

While Chelsea haven’t signed a big name in Mendy, the Blues have signed a goalkeeper that who excells in areas that Kepa has struggled at.

According to WhoScored, 94 goalkeepers made 20 appearances or more in Europe’s top five leagues last season and Mendy ranked ninth in terms of average save success (75.3%), with Kepa last (53.9%). The average among all 94 was 68.4%.

Mendy is also taller than Kepa with a height of 6ft 6in and is far more commanding from crosses and set pieces and tends to be quite proactive.
