What the Napoli president said about Mauro Icardi, Maurizio Sarri & why it should excite Chelsea

Chelsea were linked with a summer move for Inter striker Mauro Icardi.

And those links have resurfaced ahead of the January transfer window.

Icardi is enjoying a fine season for the Italian giants, scoring nine goals in 12 matches in all competitions so far this season.

That follows an impressive 29 strikes in 36 appearances for the Nerazzurri last year.

He is hot property and a player that Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has been after in the past.

Napoli were linked with a move for the 25-year-old last season, but Sarri and his president Aurelio de Laurentiis could not make the transfer come to fruition.

De Laurentiis spoke in glowing terms about Icardi back then though, and what he said should excite Blues fans with the striker now linked to a move to Stamford Bridge.

The Napoli president is quoted by Corriere dello Sport as saying:

“I offered 55-60 million, I do not remember. I met his wife, very nice. We spent an afternoon together, we negotiated a potential contract.

“Icardi is a champion, he could become a new Ronaldo, in the hands of Sarri he could make 40 goals.”

Could Sarri finally get his man now he is at Stamford Bridge?
