24-year-old Chelsea man blamed for penalty incident between Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer
During Sunday’s FA Cup quarterfinal matchup versus Leicester City, an odd occurrence occurred.
Raheem Sterling won a penalty kick for Chelsea, who were ahead 1-0, and that should have extended their lead.
Cole Palmer was supposed to take the spot kick, but Raheem Sterling assumed responsibility instead and executed a subpar kick.
Jakub Stolarczyk of Leicester City easily saved Sterling’s penalty kick, and Chelsea supporters jeered the 29-year-old England attacker when he was replaced later in the contest.
However, according to Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Conor Gallagher, who was the captain that day, should have done something to prevent this.
The ex-Blue said: “Gallagher, as a captain, you should go to Sterling and say, ‘No. He’s the penalty taker. He’s taken five in a row; he’s scored all five. He needs to take it — it’s 1-0. Let’s secure this match first’. “
Back in October, a similar thing happened in the game against Arsenal.
Sterling again had tried to take the ball away from Palmer to play the penalty, but Enzo Fernandez stepped in and gave the ball back to Cole Palmer who scored the penalty.
