OFFICIAL: Chelsea coach appointed as national team coach
Chelsea coach and former Frank Lampard’s assistant Anthony Barry has been announced as the new assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland national team.
Anthony Barry who only just joined the club August last year, will remain in his role at assistant first team coach at Stamford Bridge, but will link up with Ireland boss Stephen Kenny and the rest of the Irish coaching team only during international windows.
The 37-year-old who reportedly turned down a manager’s job at Fleetwood Town, has admitted that he is pleased with the opportunity to work under Stephen Ireland in the Irish job.
“I’m delighted to join the Republic of Ireland coaching staff ahead of the start of the FIFA 2022 World Cup campaign,” said Barry.
“The opportunity to work in international football is something I’m thoroughly looking forward to and I’m looking forward to working with manager Stephen Kenny, his staff and the squad. I’d also like to thank Chelsea for helping facilitate this opportunity.”
The 37-year-old was brought in by former Blues boss Frank Lampard, but decided to remain in Thomas Tuchel’s coaching staff, as he’s keen to get more knowledge from the German tactician.
Barry is believed to have an interest in management, but is just building his coaching profile little by little.
