Barkley’s 96th minute goal rescued a point for Chelsea, but Mourinho was incensed with Marco Ianni’s reaction on the Blues bench. Ianni taunted Mourinho and ran down the tunnel, and the United boss needed to be held back from confronting the Chelsea assistant.

A giant melee erupted as players, coaches and stewards got involved, but Mourinho insisted after the game the matter is resolved.

He said: ‘I’m not annoyed with anything. What happened with Sarri’s assistant and Sarri was the first person to come to me and say he would resolve the problem internally with him. ‘After that the assistant came to my office and apologised to me. I immediately accept the apology if he means it. I said forget it, because I make mistakes too.

‘Forget it, it’s over. He apologised and it’s over.’ United and Chelsea will face disciplinary action from the FA for failing to control their players and staff. An eventful afternoon at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea take an early lead before United mounted a fightback in the second half.

Two goals from Anthony Martial seemed to have snatched three points for Mourinho’s side, before Barkley’s late strike. United were a minute from inflicting Chelsea’s first defeat of the season, and Mourinho claims it was a tough result to take. ‘We were the best team on the pitch,’ he said. If you say before the game that one point at Stamford Bridge is a good result, it is so difficult to win here but after the game with the way the game was it is an awful result for us and a phenomenal result for them.

‘We were in the game, we controlled their triggers, (Eden) Hazard and Jorginho was well controlled. ‘After we were 2-1 up we had positions to score the third goal, we were the best team, we were calm in control.

‘I hope every referee does the same as Mike Dean and gives six minutes, I don’t know where they came from. We always tried to play, there was no time wasting. ‘We defend corners mixed, some zonal, some man to man.

Every player knows with closed eyes which player is his player, which space is his sapce. I am pleased with everything apart from the result which is awful for us.’
