Chelsea star to be sold in summer after poor display in 4-2 win over Leicester City
Chelsea defeated Leicester City 4-2 on Sunday to guarantee their spot in the FA Cup semi-finals.
Although coming into Stamford Bridge as the underdogs, the Foxes got off to a strong start before Marc Cucurella put Chelsea ahead.
In first-half extra time, Cole Palmer then increased the hosts’ lead, but Axel Disasi’s mishandled ball to Robert Sanchez, the goalie, enabling Leicester to tie the score.
Soon after the Championship leaders were level when Stephy Mavididi curled a fine finish past Sanchez, before Leicester defender Callum Doyle was shown a red card for bringing down Nicolas Jackson.
Chelsea were eventually able to make their numerical advantage pay when Carney Chukwuemeka rolled in a nice finish, before Noni Madueke’s stunning strike made it 4-2.
The FA Cup is Chelsea’s last chance to win a trophy this season, and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be desperate to see his side do so.
Off the pitch, though, it appears that one of Chelsea’s poorest performers from Sunday could be sold this summer.
According to Football Insider, winger Raheem Sterling is likely to be sold as part of a fire sale at Stamford Bridge this summer.
The England international had an afternoon to forget on Sunday, first missing a penalty before sending a well-positioned free-kick both high and wide.
The ex-Manchester City man was booed by sections of the home support, before being substituted midway through the second half.
Sterling, 29, joined Chelsea from the Citizens in 2022, shortly after Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took charge of the club.
Despite scoring an impressive 131 times in 339 games for City, the Englishman has struggled to recreate his best form since moving to London.
He has scored just 17 times in 73 games for the Blues, and the report claims that he is likely to be sold when the transfer window reopens this summer as Chelsea look to ensure they meet profit and sustainability requirements.
It is also claimed, though, that no Premier League clubs are likely to be able to afford the player’s £350,000-per-week wages, so Chelsea may therefore have to look further afield for potential suitors.
