“He’s built for Conference league” “Don’t sell him please” – Chelsea fans warns to keep Chelsea player for Conference League competition
Many Chelsea fans have a theory that they should keep one specific player ahead of the new season and let him loose in the UEFA Conference League competition.
Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League last season, which means they’ve entered the Conference League for the 2024/25 campaign.
First, the Blues must come through a two-legged play-off tie later in August to reach the main stage of the competition. The draw for the tournament’s play-offs takes place on 5 August.
Enzo Maresca’s side may only be in the third-rated European competition, but it’s a chance for them to create a piece of club history. Chelsea can become the first team to ever win the Conference League, Europa League and Champions League.
The Conference League is only in its fourth ever season and previous winners include Roma, West Ham and Olympiacos.
Chelsea fans predict Marc Guiu to be Conference League expert
Many Chelsea supporters on social media insist that Marc Guiu could be a secret weapon for them in the new season in the Conference League.
Guiu, who cost the Blues £5m (BBC) to sign from Barcelona this summer, is currently away with the first-team squad for their pre-season tour. The 18-year-old striker is certainly taking his chance as well with three fantastic performances so far, including a goal this week versus Club America.
It’s going to be interesting to see what’s in store for him next season. If he stays, the youngster could have tough competition from the likes of Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku to start. There should be plenty of games to go around due to domestic and European matches, though.
Here are some Blues fans on X suggesting that Guiu is kept beyond the summer window to feature in the European campaign:
One fan said: “Guiu has proven to be one hell of a steal…steady progression in the conference league this season and he’ll be golden in few years.”
Another wrote: “The issue for Guiu has been confidence. If he stays (and I really hope he does) and he smashes from the off after the City game, specifically in the Conference League, you’ll see a different player. His movement is already brilliant – just haven’t seen the killer instinct yet.”
A third user posted: “[Christopher] Nkunku in Premier League, Guiu in Conference League, Nico Jackson in cup games or when we facing Spurs.”
One supporter claimed: “Marc Guiu can’t go on loan, he’s my first choice striker for Conference League and cup games.”
Another said: “Should keep Guiu still. He’ll have some fun in the Conference League.”
Big Marc Guiu decision looms
Guiu’s certainly got the fanbase talking because of his impact this summer, so an important decision lies ahead for the club’s decision-makers when it comes to the player’s future.
During a recent interview transcribed by Football.London, Maresca suggested Guiu will stay at Chelsea next season. That’ll certainly be music to the ears of supporters above.
In fairness, Guiu could have a worthwhile season developing with the Blues as long as he’s mixing it with the senior squad and getting a fair chunk of minutes. If he can play 20+ matches in his debut season, which feels more realistic with a deep run in Europe, then perhaps it’s right to keep him.
