Joe Cole, a former Chelsea player turned pundit, has been raving about a player that Chelsea sold for £20 million in 2021 after watching him this weekend.
Chelsea would certainly concede to some past blunders in player sales, both under old and new ownership, but they have also made numerous correct deals. In my opinion, they haven’t missed many outgoing deals, and many of them were necessary for the team’s success.
Marc Guehi, however, is not one of them. In retrospect, I am confident that whoever consented to Guehi’s sale at the time would have regretted it later on, simply because he has gone on to be outstanding.
But that is the beauty of hindsight, and at the time he probably had to go due to not seeing a starting place in the Chelsea team anytime soon. And he clearly made the right decision as well.
Joe Cole loves Guehi
When speaking during TNT Sports’ coverage of Palace’s defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, Cole spoke glowingly about Guehi.
He said: “He is so assured, he is so calm. If you look at him, he is never ruffled. I think he is at a stage where he has cut out a lot of his mistakes already, so he is getting better and better.
“He is a leader. He is the captain of the side. He is a top, top player. I think he is England’s, if not number one, number two centre-half. John Stones and Marc Guehi now have solidified that. I think he is top, top-drawer.”
