“He’s far better than Sanchez” “Just pay £5m” – Joe Cole tells Chelsea must £5m goalkeeper who’s far better than Sanchez
Chelsea are set to target a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window after issues with their two main stoppers this season.
Chelsea’s duo Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have both come under criticism over the course of the campaign.
Sanchez has struggled to stake a serious claim to be a regular starter for the Blues.
However, there are also doubts over Jorgensen, particularly in wake of the error which gifted Aston Villa a late win.
Now, Joe Cole has named a goalkeeper he thinks has been amazing this season and suggested that Chelsea should take a look at him.
Chelsea legend Joe Cole hails Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels
The player in question is Matz Sels, who has been superb for Nottingham Forest this season since his £5million move from Strasbourg last year.
“Do you know who I think is one of the best goalkeepers in the league at the moment? Sels from Forest,” Cole said on The Dressing Room podcast.
“Mate, I’m telling you. Watch him play. Assured, makes saves…
“I don’t know whether he’s having a golden period in his time but they are out there. You’ve just got to pick the right one.”
Cole also argued that Chelsea’s repeated mistakes in the goalkeeping department were a sign that their entire recruitment model could be broken.
“It’s something systemically wrong because you can’t have nine goalkeepers on your books and not know which one is your number one,’ he said.
“You’ve got Kepa [Arrizabalaga] out on loan, Petrovic out on loan, you’ve bought some young, promising ones.
“If your system works well, you shouldn’t make as many mistakes that have been made with goalkeepers.”
Earlier in February, Cole said Sels was his shout for goalkeeper of the season so far.
Goalkeepers Chelsea are currently monitoring ahead of summer transfer window
TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has confirmed that Chelsea are keeping tabs on Bart Verbruggen of Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Seagulls stopper fits everything that Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca wants – he is insistent that a new goalkeeper needs to play from the back.
Chelsea have also done a lot of work on Parma’s Zion Suzuki and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi, both of whom have been shining in Serie A.
