“Roman Abramovich trying to get Chelsea back? – See why Abramovich £2.5bn Chelsea sale still frozen after three years

According to The Athletic, the £2.5 billion raised from the sale of Chelsea remains frozen in a UK bank account, almost three years after it was pledged to support humanitarian causes following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club in 2022 after being sanctioned by the UK government, which labelled him a “pro-Kremlin oligarch.”

At the time of the sale, Abramovich publicly stated that “all net proceeds from the sale would be donated to victims of the war in Ukraine.” However, despite Chelsea’s £4.25bn takeover by Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly being finalised in May 2022, the funds have yet to be distributed.

The delay has raised questions about why the money remains inaccessible and when it will be used for its intended purpose. With no resolution in sight, the saga surrounding the funds continues to drag on, leaving uncertainty over when and how the promised aid will reach those in need.
