Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has identified Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell as a priority signing ahead of the January transfer window.
Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday showed why Lampard is desperate to sign the 22 year old left-back from Leicester City.
Chelsea lack quality at left-back and our two left-backs, Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri, have both failed to perform in big games so far this season.
Alonso was terrible in the 4-4 Champions League draw against Ajax at Stamford Bridge and hasn’t featured for Chelsea since his poor display against Ajax.
Emerson Palmieri seems to be Lampard’s first choice at left-back but the Italian international isn’t also up to the standard required at Chelsea.
Against Manchester City on Saturday, Emerson had real trouble keeping up with Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez. Emerson allowed Mahrez to cut inside too easily for Manchester City’s winner and Lampard did the right thing by taking him off before the hour mark.
Chelsea’s options at left-back aren’t good enough.
