Chelsea have struggled against teams ready to defend deep and not offering much in attack this season. However, the Blues lost 1-0 to Newcastle on Saturday despite dominating large parts of the game.
Chelsea’s performance in the defeat to Newcastle United is only going to force Chelsea boss Frank Lampard into pushing hard for another attacking player. Tammy Abraham has scored an impressive 13 goals for the Blues this season but other attacking players around him aren’t offering much in attack.
Willian has scored just four goals for the Blues this season, Mason Mount has five goals, Christian Pulisic has five Premier League goals and Callum Hudson-Odoi has scored just once in the Premier League this season.
The performance against Newcastle United will force Lampard into pushing hard for Borussia Dortmund Jadon Sancho. The England international has netted ten Bundesliga goals and added another ten assists this season.
Lampard admitted after the defeat to Newcastle United that the Blues can’t practice finishing more than they already do in training and insists if the Blues want to move forward, then we need to score more goals.
“We can’t practice finishing, we can’t practice entering the final third more than what we do,” Lampard added. “When we are on the pitch and in games we have to be more clinical, the players know that. I am very pleased with the players we have got.
“We have a lot of talent in this team, but sticking the ball in the back of the net is a huge thing and if we want to do it as a club going forward, this season and next season going forward and we are controlling games as we are, then we have to score goals.”
