Chelsea could complete one of the best transfers of the Todd Boehly era as club eye £30m bargain
The words Chelsea and bargain do not often go together, especially since the Blues were taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
Under Todd Boehly, Chelsea have paid way over the odds to land some of their targets. As good as Moises Caicedo has been, it is hard to justify spending £115m on a midfielder, for example.
Chelsea have been able to pick up the odd bargain, though, namely Cole Palmer. And they could be about to land another one.
Palmer remains a goal threat for Chelsea and only cost his employers £45m. The Blues will not find a better signing than him.
Jean-Philippe Mateta would be smart business
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is unlikely to make the same kind of impact as Palmer at Chelsea, but he could still be a very good signing for Enzo Maresca‘s side.
In their search for a new No.9, it has been claimed that Chelsea are currently monitoring Mateta.
According to CaughtOffside, the Frenchman could cost as little as £30m, meaning that the Blues or another outfit could be about to secure an absolute bargain.
Mateta was one of the best strikers in the Premier League last season, scoring 16 goals in 35 appearances.
Jean-Philippe Mateta has been more clinical than Nicolas Jackson
Mateta can provide Nicolas Jackson with serious competition if he moves to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The 27-year-old has actually been more clinical than Chelsea’s first-choice striker over these last two seasons.
Mateta has one more goal in the Premier League than Jackson this term, while his xG difference is also better.
It was the same theme during the 2023/24 campaign as well, where Jackson scored two fewer goals than his Palace counterpart.
Boehly and co have come in for a lot of criticism for some of the business that they have done at Chelsea. If they land Mateta, though, that is probably one deal that cannot be criticised.
