Chelsea used to have a very good midfield about a decade ago.
The likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and Michael Essien were three powerhouses that were unstoppable during their time at the club.
Since the retirement of the Old Guard, Chelsea’s midfield hasn’t looked as it used to be when this trio was still active.
After the game against Norwich, BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has hailed the performance of Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic that his performance had the qualities of Lampard, Ballack and Essien.
In the absence of N’Golo Kante, Kovacic stepped in and put in a sterling performance for Chelsea against Norwich at the weekend that has left Crooks in awe of the Croatian.
“Since the departures of Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack, John Terry and Frank Lampard, Chelsea have lacked leadership on the pitch,” he told the BBC.
