Chelsea player’s future is already ‘uncertain’ one day after Enzo Maresca’s arrival at training ground

One player at Chelsea may not have a long career there now that Enzo Maresca has joined the team.

After leading the Foxes back to the Premier League at the first attempt, the former Leicester City manager took over for Mauricio Pochettino.

Having served as one of Pep Guardiola’s assistant managers at Manchester City, Maresca has already added new players to his roster during the summer transfer window.

Marc Guiu joined from Barcelona, Tosin Adarabioyo joined on a free transfer from Fulham, and Omari Kellyman moved from Villa Park to Stamford Bridge. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Maresca were also reunited following Chelsea and Leicester’s £30 million agreement.

Chelsea still needs to release players despite the influx of many new players, and a number of players have been linked with a departure.

A day following Maresca’s formal entry into the team, Ben Chilwell, a left-back, is one player whose future is unknown, according to The Telegraph.

After agreeing to a new deal in April 2023, the former Leicester player was named the team’s vice-captain and led the team in the 2024 EFL Cup final loss to Liverpool.

Chilwell has only appeared in one of Chelsea’s previous ten Premier League games, therefore Gareth Southgate passed him over for the England team for Euro 2024. In an attempt to guarantee his future at Stamford Bridge, he was observed in training early on.

England international Conor Gallagher is another whose situation is unclear with rivals Tottenham interested in signing him even after their big-money move for Leeds star Archie Gray.

With England currently struggling without a natural left-back, Wayne Rooney admitted he was shocked that Chilwell wasn’t called up for this summer’s tournament.

He told the BBC broadcast: “I was very surprised and really shocked that Ben Chilwell didn’t get picked – just for the balance of having a left-footed player there.

“He plays at Chelsea and has played well for England in the past.

“He’s a good left-back – he’s been in tournaments as well – so I was really surprised he wasn’t selected.”
