Cesar Azpilicueta is hoping to be named Chelsea’s club captain this week with Maurizio Sarri expected to opt for the Spaniard ahead of Eden Hazard.
Gary Cahill’s absence means Azpilicueta’s taken the armband this season but Sarri said he was against naming a club captain until taking a longer look at his squad.
The Blues have made a fine start to the season, winning five and drawing two of their first seven matches, while beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
Sarri admitted last week that he wanted to speak to the club before making an announcement.
‘I want to speak with my club face to face before I tell you my decision. I think it’s right the club knows my decision before the journalists,’ said Sarri.
‘It has been impossible in the last two or three weeks, but I think it will be possible next week.’
According to the Telegraph, Azpilicueta believes he’s leading the race to be named club captain and is hoping for an announcement this week.
The Spaniard is more eager than Hazard to get the armband but will respect Sarri’s decision either way.
