Chelsea to play Grimsby or Macclesfield in Carabao Cup 3rd Round

Chelsea have been drawn against the winner of the encounter between Grimsby and Macclesfield in the Carabao Cup Third Round.

The League Two sides have not been able to finish their 2nd round match because of heavy rain.

Our next opponent will be known on 10 September when the replay will take place. The 3rd round game will take place the week commencing on 23 September.

In rough terms, the Blues are just five victories away from lifting the trophy. Carabao Cup is the first piece of silverware an English team can win during a season, the final being held on 1 March at Wembley. Unlike the FA Cup, this one is only for the 92 clubs representing the first four tiers.

In case of a draw up to the semifinals, the winner is decided by taking penalties with no extra times. The semifinal is a two-legged tie that follows the same procedure. Only the final game can have two extra times in case of a draw (and then a shoot-out if needed) in normal time.

Chelsea have progressed all the way to the final of this competition last season. On 24 February, Maurizio Sarri’s team were defeated by Manchester City only after a penalty shootout.

The last time the trophy was lifted by a Chelsea captain in the 2014/15 season when the Blues defeated Tottenham 2-0.
