Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola has revealed the club is still working on signing a replacement for Cesc Fabregas who completed a move to AS Monaco.
Several reports claimed Chelsea were interested in signing Leandro Paredes but are now set to miss out to Paris Saint-Germain.
But after making a second bid worth £31.2m to Zenit St Petersburg for Paredes, they decided not to go any higher.
PSG have since gazumped them and the Argentina international is set to complete a deal today worth in excess of £40m.
But with six days left in the window, Zola says another arrival is still possible. He said: “I’m not in a position where I can say more about that. It’s something we are talking with the club.
“It’s certainly an area where we could do, but it could be a problem if we have an injury. I think there is a good understanding between Maurizio and Marina (Granovskaia).”
Cagliari’s Nicolo Barella has also been on their wish-list, but he has intimated that he is not willing to leave Serie A mid-season or just be a back-up to Jorginho.
