“Experience player, Chelsea should never have sold” – Gallas reveals why Chelsea should never have sold £30 million former Chelsea man
Chelsea underwent numerous changes upon Todd Boehly’s takeover of the team from Roman Abramovich, one of which was the firing of manager Thomas Tuchel.
A significant portion of the previous team left last summer, and new players were added. The new owners also made changes to the playing roster throughout two summer transfer windows.
Mateo Kovacic was the only player sold by Chelsea that William Gallas now says shouldn’t have been sold.
The new Chelsea owners decided to let go of Kovacic after signing Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. Mateo Kovacic is now set to win the league with Manchester City.
William Gallas believes the experience of Kovacic would have helped the incoming young midfielders.
Gallas told Genting Casino: “For Mateo Kovacic, bringing in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez was always going to push him out the door.
“But those sort of young midfielders need experience alongside them and Kovacic would have provided this, so maybe that was a mistake to let him go as well.
”Maybe he should have stayed for another season, around the young players to help them improve. It was the right move for him, but not for Chelsea.”
