Gonzalo Higuain squad number at Chelsea

Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain is on the cusp of joining Chelsea but what shirt number is he going to wear?

The Blues started this season on a good note but the lack of a potent goal scorer has affected their ambition for the title. Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud have both failed to step up their game, leaving Sarri with no choice than to play Eden Hazard as a false nine.

Morata is set leave for the La Liga but Maurizio Sarri has also set his sight on reuniting with his former player Higuain. The Argentinean enjoyed the best form of his life under Sarri for Napoli – he netted 36 League goals in 35 games and the Italian boss still believes in his ability.

He’s currently on loan with Milan from Juventus but an agreement is already in place for his move to Chelsea. He is scheduled to have medicals with the Blues today ahead of the proposed move.

Express Sport have examined the squad number he may be donning at Chelsea.

No 4.

Available after the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Monaco, although a new midfield arrival in the form of Nicolo Barella or Leandro Paredes is most likely to take this one.

No 9.

The obvious choice after Alvaro Morata switched to No 29 at the start of the season.

Higuain has worn this number at AC Milan, Juventus and Napoli for the past six seasons.

No 14.

Tiemoue Bakayoko vacated this shirt after his loan move to AC Milan in the summer.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek also previously wore 14 but took No 12 at the beginning of the campaign.

No 16.

Available with most recent owner Kenedy out on loan at Newcastle.

Not the most stylish of shirt numbers, although Arjen Robben and Roberto Di Matteo have previously worn it.

No 19.

Tammy Abraham’s number, although the young striker is currently on loan with Aston Villa in the Championship.

Diego Costa formerly owned the shirt, so Higuain would be in good company if he took this one.

No 20.

Higuain wore 20 during his time at Real Madrid and while that shirt is currently owned by Callum Hudson-Odoi, the Argentine could snap it up if Bayern Munich complete their pursuit of the young winger.

No 23.

Michy Batshuayi has worn 23 during his time at Stamford Bridge, and while the Belgian is currently on loan at Valencia he could well be on his way back to reclaim the number after a tough few months.

No 25.

Not officially retired, but no player has worn 25 since Gianfranco Zola.

No 26.

John Terry was the last player to pull on 26, so any new arrival would have big boots to fill.
