“It’s a red card challenge” – Premier League release fresh decision on Lisandro Martinez foul on Cole Palmer

During Sunday’s 1-1 tie between Chelsea and Manchester United, a contentious decision was made.

VAR was notified of an incident late in the game.

The referee only gave Chelsea’s Cole Palmer a yellow card despite Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez’s late tackle.

Video Assistant Referee Michael Salisbury reviewed the challenge, but stuck with the referee’s decision, which has sparked outcry from Chelsea fans, with Blues boss Enzo Maresca claiming it was a red card offence.

The official Premier League Match Centre account on social media explained how the officials came to this decision.

The tweet read: “The referee issued a yellow card to Martinez for a challenge on Palmer. VAR checked for a potential red card and confirmed the referee’s call of no red card, deeming that it was a reckless challenge and not serious foul play.”

Former United captain Roy Keane, who was covering the game as a pundit for Sky Sports, however said, “Martinez is a lucky boy. It’s a nasty tackle.”
