JUST IN: Chelsea officially announce two more transfer moves
Chelsea continue to remain active in the transfer market, both in terms of arrivals and departures. They recently agreed on a fee with Ajax for Jorrel Hato. The Dutch international defender’s arrival is only a matter of time from here. But before that, the Blues have announced the signing of an English winger.
Top European clubs were believed to be involved in the race to sign Jesse Derry. But it is Chelsea who have come out on top.
It was believed that Derry was on his way to Bayern Munich. But Chelsea swooped in late and got the deal done. Now, it has been made official.
On the club’s official website, Chelsea announced the signing of Derry. The 18-year-old has agreed a contract with the Blues until 2029.
Official: Chelsea announce signing of English winger
Derry was considered one of the brightest prospects in English football during his time at Crystal Palace. But he is not proven at the senior level yet. That is why that contract is not much longer.
It remains to be seen what Chelsea’s plan is when it comes to Derry’s development moving forward. Of course, it would be simple to put him in the club’s youth ranks and bring him up to the senior team from time to time, when the opportunity presents itself.
But there have also been suggestions in the media that Chelsea believe that Derry is past that point and could be sent out on loan to a club where he will get consistent playing time at the senior level. Let’s see which option the Blues end up picking.
There is no doubt about Derry’s talent. His numbers at youth level are staggering. But now, it is about making sure that he develops into the player that everybody believes he can be.
‘Here we go’ – Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea striker’s exit
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the Chelsea striker’s summer exit, as the Blues continue to readjust their squad.
The striker situation at Chelsea has been one worth keeping an eye on this entire summer. They brought in Liam Delap before the Club World Cup and then added Joao Pedro to their ranks in the middle of the tournament. The Brazilian scored three goals in two starts to guide them to glory in the United States.
While the fans are delighted with those additions, it has raised questions about the future of Nicolas Jackson. He continues to be linked with clubs like Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan and more. But a striker has completed a Chelsea exit before him, albeit on loan.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign Marc Guiu on loan from Chelsea. There is no buy option clause as he remains a part of the Blues’ long-term plans. It has gotten the ‘here we go’.
Guiu was signed from FC Barcelona last summer and scored six goals for Chelsea in 16 appearances, with all of them coming in Europe. But he needs to be playing more consistent football in order to continue his development. That is hard to expect at Stamford Bridge. So, leaving on loan is the right step for all parties.
‘Here we go’ – Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea striker’s exit
Guiu is someone with a ton of potential. But he was not going get much playing time ahead of the likes of Pedro, Delap and Jackson.
Now, does Guiu’s exit mean that Chelsea are planning to continue with Jackson? That has been the public stance from the club so far, at least.
Of course, if the right offer comes in, one would imagine that Chelsea would be open to the idea of an exit. The reality is, over the past two seasons, Jackson has shown a lot of positives. But at the same time, he has barely improved in terms of his finishing and discipline. If that does not change soon, the Blues will move on.
