Maurizio Sarri has claimed that David Luiz has a ‘big future’ at Chelsea, despite the best efforts of Antonio Conte to prevent it.
Luiz’s time as a Chelsea player looked to be coming to an end last season. There were rumours of a rift with Conte, and the Brazilian missed the majority of the season through injury.
He remains one of the best distributors from the back that you’re likely to find anywhere in the world. Luiz is the quintessential Sarri defender, so it’s no surprise that he’s one of the first names on his team sheet.
Following our opening day victory over Huddersfield Town, Sarri sang the praises of the Champions League winner. He’s quoted by Bleacher Report saying:
“I don’t know about what happened in the past but now he has a good chance. We only have to carry on like we are doing now with him.”
“I disagree that he can only play as one of three central defenders. If you are a good defender, you can play in a line of three or in a four.”
“David has a big future here. He will be useful for us but not just on the pitch. He is also very important in the dressing room. I very much enjoy his attitude when I am working with him.”
It’s probably safe to say that Luiz will be getting a new contract. His current deal expires next summer. If Sarri wants him here, then we’ll keep him here. Who knows, he could end up with the armband too!
