Maurizio Sarri has said that Chelsea FC are waiting to assess the seriousness of injuries suffered by Cesc Fabregas and Olivier Giroud.

Giroud suffered an ankle problem during Chelsea FC’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace over the weekend as the Blues ended 2018 with a win.

Fabregas, meanwhile, has not featured for the Blues since 22 December and he has been struggling with a neck injury in recent days.

Sarri is currently preparing his side for their first Premier League game on 2019, with the west London side set to take on Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

And speaking at his news conference after Chelsea FC’s 1-0 win over Palace at the weekend, Sarri delivered the following update on Giroud: “The problem is his ankle. I don’t know the extent at the moment. We have to wait. Later I will see the doctor for the first result.”

Asked about Fabregas’ situation, he added: “Fabregas has a neck injury. I don’t know how long he will be out for. I don’t know if he has to rest for two days or for 10 days.”

Fabregas’ future at Chelsea FC has been something of a source of speculation of late, with the midfielder’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea FC are looking to try and break back into the top four this season after they finished in fifth place last term and won the FA Cup under Antonio Conte.
