“Not a good sign” -The real reason Noni Madueke was dropped finally revealed – got everyone talking
Even Chelsea’s strong and prestigious team began to feel a little overworked yesterday as injuries, sickness, exhaustion, and suspension began to bite.
However, Noni Madueke was absent and two goalkeepers were on the bench when the squads were announced. We anticipated that the England winger would start and most definitely be included in the team. We could only presume that he had been included on the list of those who were unavailable when he wasn’t.
But when asked about if after the game, manager Enzo Maresca insisted it was a “technical decision,” a rather continental phrase which basically means a managerial decision i.e. anything which is not based on injury or tactics.
It wasn’t clear what exactly Madueke had done, but as we wrote last night, it wouldn’t take long for the press to get to the bottom of it. Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail seems to have got there first.
His piece today claims that Madueke’s absence was due to poor training performance. After one warning in August, another at the start of December and a third this week, the punishment was missing out on the game. Enzo Maresca is apparently trying to forge a “firm, but fair” culture.
All eyes on Monday’s team sheet
With a desperate need to rotate a tiring team and our next game coming up just 72 hours from now, Maresca has a big call to make over what to do with Madueke.
One game out of the squad entirely should be more than sufficient punishment for bad training performance – he’s already potentially cost his team by taking a stand yesterday when we really could have done with Madueke coming off the bench to shake things up.
Surely he won’t cut off his nose to spite his face on Monday?
As for Madueke – when do we start to worry that he hasn’t got the message?
