“On his way to Chelsea” “He’s going to be a top player” – Club president confirms Argentine star move to Chelsea

Juan Roman Riquelme, the president of Boca Juniors and a legend in Argentina, thinks Aaron Anselmino has what it takes to succeed.

The 19-year-old defender was loaned back to the Argentine team for the season after the Blues agreed to pay £15 million to sign him from Boca in the summer.

In an effort to uncover the best players the continent has to offer, the Blues have signed a number of players from South America, including Anselmino.

Riquelme believes Anselmino can reach the top

Anselmino was expected to complete the season at Boca and join up with the Blues in the summer, but Chelsea have taken the decision to recall the teenager.

The defender is expected to join up with Enzo Maresca’s squad at Cobham next week and start training with the group, whilst Chelsea decide what the next best step for his career is.

Competition for places in defence is fierce, and although Anselmino has impressed at Boca he will be competing with the likes of Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi.

A loan to a European club hasn’t been ruled out, although there’s currently no space to send him to sister club Strasbourg.

Anselmino is very much seen as a talent for the future and Argentina legend Riquelme believes the youngster has what it takes to reach the top.

“He has developed a lot. With the growth, the head that he has and the desire to learn that he shows, he is on his way to being a great footballer,” he told ESPN.
