Celebrating birthdays are typically opportunities to retell happy memories. But, Chelsea fans were quick to air their views on Oscar’s departure as the Brazilian celebrates his 28th birthday today.
Despite leaving the Blues in January 2017, it seems that several Chelsea fans still rue the club’s decision to offload the attacking midfielder.
While he may have failed to fulfil his potential at the club, Oscar proved to be an important player for the Blues. He was particularly impressive under Jose Mourinho’s guidance during his second spell in charge of the club.
In four-and-a-half seasons with the club, Oscar amassed 203 appearances. His statistical contributions were also impressive, with Oscar scoring 38 goals for the club and assisting a further 37.
The Brazilian – who has been capped 48 times by his country – contributed tellingly to the Blues’ league triumph in the 2014/15 campaign. In 28 league appearances, Oscar contributed towards 14 goals (six scored, eight assists) – averaging a goal contribution every two games.
Since leaving the club, Oscar has proven to be very influential for the Chinese Super League side, Shanghai SIPG. In 115 appearances for the Chinese club, Oscar has contributed towards 95 goals (36 goals, 59 assists – a hugely impressive tally.
Judging by the reaction of many Chelsea supporters on social media, selling Oscar was a mistake by the club.
