Chelsea defeated Southampton 3-0 at St. Mary’s to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
Chelsea were denied a clear penalty during the first-half. Olivier Giroud was fouled inside the area, but only a corner kick was awarded. The decision not to use VAR in the Premier League continues to baffle.
Don’t fear, though. When Eden Hazard in this form is on the pitch, you’re going to get a goal eventually. Ross Barkley won the ball back in the final third before slotting the ball through to Hazard, who finished emphatically. If you missed the goal, click here to see it.
Soon after the second-half got underway, Chelsea added a second. After Willian floated a free-kick into the Southampton penalty area, Olivier Giroud fired a bicycle-kick across the face of the goal, which was tapped home by Barkley. Click here to see that one.
With two minutes of injury time left to play, Alvaro Morata, on as a substitute, got his goal. He deftly dinked the ball over the goalkeeper to make it two goals in two games. Let’s hope his goal-scoring form continues!
The victory sends Chelsea to the top of the Premier League table, at least temporarily. Liverpool host Manchester City today. We’ll be keeping an eye on that one for sure.
