“Time for a change” “Needs to compete for the league next season” – Enzo Maresca reveals key position he needs to upgrade this summer as Chelsea fans agreed with him
Chelsea247 understands that The Blues are working to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer, despite the West London club insisting they don’t want another.
The Blues are already well stocked in the goalkeeper department, however, TBR Football sources believe that Enzo Marseca is not particularly keen on any of the four.
Many at Stamford Bridge also share the same feeling in regards to the goalkeeper situation and work has now commenced on assessing potential targets.
Filip Jorgensen and Robert Sanchez have been the two goalkeepers available to Marseca this season, meanwhile, Mike Penders and Djordje Petrovic have spent the season out on loan.
Enzo Marseca keen to upgrade Chelsea’s goalkeepers
Enzo Maresca does not appear to be a big fan of Chelsea’s goalkeeping quartet of Mike Penders, Filip Jorgensen, Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic, sources have told TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey.
Jorgensen and Sanchez have both disappointed for the Blues this season, with the Spaniard more often than not being the preferred option.
Penders is yet to feature for the club having spent the season on loan at Genk and then there is Petrovic who looks the most promising of the four, but also a player who has previously disappointed when given the chance in West London.
Petrovic is having a great loan spell at Strasbourg and is highly rated in Ligue, however, Chelsea’s Italian manager still has doubts about him.
Bailey told TBR Football: “The goalkeeper situation is a thing at Chelsea. They are insistent they want one of the four goalkeepers to be starting next season, but I’m not convinced they won’t bring another in.
“I’m not sure Maresca rates any of the four, including (Mike) Penders from Belgium, I’m told. (Filip) Jorgensen has his issues, Sanchez has proved he’s not good enough and Petrovic does have his fans at Stamford Bridge, but there’s a reason he’s at Strasbourg now.
“There are a lot of people at Chelsea who want another keeper, publicly they are saying they won’t sign one, but there are people doing work on goalkeepers.”
Jorgensen was the goalkeeper selected between the sticks against Legia Warsaw, but it was a game to forget for the Swedish shotstopper.
The 23-year-old handed the Polish side the chance to take the lead after rushing off his line and wiping out Tomas Pekhart, who then converted from 12 yards.
The Blues ended up suffering a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge, but advanced 4-2 on aggregate having comfortably won the first leg.
