Todd Boehly speaks on possible Mauricio Pochettino sacking
Owner of Chelsea, Todd Boehly, has expressed his “patience” with his position at the team in a statement that may also be seen as a clue about Mauricio Pochettino’s future as head coach.
With the Blues spending a large portion of the Premier League season mired in mid-table, Pochettino has faced pressure at different levels this season. But things have been considerably better in 2024; as the season approaches its last day, Chelsea is in sixth place and likely to qualify for Europe.
While finishing sixth is definitely not where Chelsea wants to end up in the long run, Pochettino’s comeback has been impressive given the cries made during the season for his dismissal.
Boehly has already sacked two managers – Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter – since taking over at the club from Roman Abramovich, having spent more than £1billilon on new signings. But Pochettino looks to have earned a second season with the club.
His future was never in doubt, if you listen to Boehly’s recent comments. Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum, the Blues owner mentioned the early days of his tenure at the LA Dodgers baseball team and needing patience to succeed.
He said: “The number one thing is you’ve got to be patient. You’re putting something together and you’re expecting it to come together really quickly and the reality is that anything really good take a bit of time.
“So patience was always in our thoughts. When we bought the Dodgers, when we started the season in 2013, the team basically started 15 [wins] and 25 [defeats] and we were struggling. But we kept sticking to the plan and we knew that the plan, or we believed the plan was the right plan at the time and we went through a similar thing with Chelsea.
“You’ve got to have the resolve to not hear all the noise going on around you and at the same time remain patient and committed to the plan.
“Since Boxing Day we’re the fourth best team in the Premier League, so when you look at what’s going on it feels better and better.”
