Chelsea supporters are getting excited on social media.
That is because Inter Milan have made a decision on Mauro Icardi. Icardi was named by the Chelsea fans as their dream January transfer window signing when football.london ran a transfer survey last month.
The Argentinian has enjoyed a fine season for Inter, scoring nine goals in 20 games
However, he had nine goals in 13 games as he has not found the back of the net in his last seven league appearances – his worst spell since joining the club in 2013.
Those seven games have all been since there has been speculation surrounding his future, with talks over a new deal at the San Siro reportedly stalling, and suggestions that a number of Europe’s top clubs were interested in signing him. Inter boss Luciano Spalletti has told the club to make a deal happen for the sake of the first team and Icardi’s fortunes.
He is quoted as saying after the narrow win over Parma at the weekend as saying: “Mauro is evidently seeing his performance affected by some situations that have been going on recently.
“He needs to free himself from the talk that is around him. The directors agreed to start talking about the contract, so now they need to go there and conclude it.”
But the contract talks have had an impact on the club to such an extent that they have made a decision over Icardi’s role in the team – he has been stripped of the captaincy.
Inter announced that they had handed the captain’s armband to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, potentially in an attempt to get Icardi to focus on his job of scoring goals for the team.
