Why I lost it in 2-1 Chelsea defeat to Aston Villa – Cole Palmer finally reveals
Cole Palmer was unable to hold in his frustration during Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Despite taking the lead in the first half through Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea went on to lose 2-1 at Villa Park.
Cole Palmer had a glorious chance to put the Blues back in front after catching Emiliano Martinez out of his goal. But the attacking midfielder could not take advantage and saw his shot block by Ezri Konsa.
However, that was not the moment that caused Palmer to explode. All in all, it was a game to forget for the 22-year-old, Filip Jorgensen and the rest of the team. It was Jorgensen’s mistake that ended up costing Chelsea.
Cole Palmer reacted angrily to overhit pass to Christopher Nkunku
Palmer’s shooting was not on point at Villa Park and neither was his passing. Had it been, Enzo Maresca‘s side probably would have won the match.
There was one moment in the second half where after a good bit of footwork in the box, Palmer tried to play in Christopher Nkunku.
He overhit the pass, though, which resulted in the ball going straight past Nkunku. It led to a very angry reaction from the Englishman, who normally finds his teammate in that kind of situation.
Palmer cannot be solely blamed for Chelsea’s latest defeat, however. The Blues did more than enough to return to Stamford Bridge with at least one point. Again, it was Jorgensen who ended up letting the team down with his shocker.
Understandably, Jorgensen left Chelsea fans feeling frustrated following his error. It will now be interesting to see whether Maresca decides to recall Robert Sanchez, who was recently dropped after his own mistakes between the sticks.
Cole Palmer’s recent form
After failing to score at Villa Park, it has now been five Premier League games since Palmer last found the back of the net.
That is really worrying, especially with Nicolas Jackson currently sidelined. If Palmer is not scoring while Jackson remains unavailable, you really do have to wonder how the Blues are going to win matches.
The England international has also failed to register an assist since December when Chelsea beat Aston Villa in the reverse fixture.
Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has had some concerns about Palmer of late, and Saturday’s defeat to Unai Emery’s men would not have eased them.
