Chelsea make final summer transfer decision on Dries Mertens

According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Chelsea remain interested in signing Napoli star Dries Mertens in the summer after missing out on the 32 year old during the January transfer window.

Mertens is yet to agree a new contract with Napoli despite his current deal coming to an end this summer.

The Belgian is demanding wages of £6.3m per year, which is double his current annual package of £3.4m but Napoli are unwilling to pay that much to a 32 year old.

With Napoli unwilling to meet his wage demands, Mertens is keeping his options open with Chelsea and Inter Milan interested in signing him.

Mertens broke Diego Maradona’s record tally of 115 goals for Napoli late last year and is just one goal short of Marek Hamsik’s record of 121 goals.

Mertens needs just two goals to break Hamsik’s record and become Napoli’s all-time leading goalscorer.
