Lampard receives ‘strong warning’ following Chelsea’s 3-3 draw against Southampton

Lampard receives ‘strong warning’ following Chelsea’s 3-3 draw against Southampton.

Despite racing into a 2-goal lead inside 30 minutes against Southampton, Chelsea were made to settle for a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has warned Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to sort the weaknesses in Chelsea’s defence.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Hislop said: “Chelsea were quite simply awful defensively.

“You can start with Christensen leaving Ings to run off him and stand in an acre of space for their first, the Kurt Zouma mistake followed up by Kepa being indecisive for Southampton’s second. It was bordering on comical, in all honesty.

“Then, later on when you’re 3-2 up and you concede free-kicks in dangerous areas needlessly.

“As much as you want to point the finger at inexperience or a need for reinforcements at the back, Thiago Silva’s injury, this is just basic professionalism.

“You don’t have to be a good defender to avoid the mistakes Chelsea are making and continue to cost them.

“Frank Lampard has to sort this out. He has to give these defenders authority to make decisions in the spur of the moment. “He has to get them to put the ball out of play, do the sensible things, do the things you should be doing as any professional at this level should.

“I don’t know what’s causing some of these mistakes, and it’s frustrating.

“It must be frustrating for Chelsea fans and for Frank Lampard, for anyone hoping for better at this level.”
