3 players that could become next Chelsea captain revealed as Azpilicueta contract ends

The Blues have had some fantastic captains since the start of the Roman Abramovich Era, which includes legendary captain John Terry, down to Gary Cahil, and now Cesar Azpilicueta.

However, Cesar Azpilicueta is the current longest serving player at Chelsea, having joined the club at the start of the 2012/13 football season, he is the hardworking type of player, and has won every possible trophy at the club, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Super Cup and Club World Cup.

In 2019, his hardwork was rewarded with the Chelsea captain hand band, when Gary Cahil departed the club, and since then he has been an impactful captain for the club.

But the Spanish international is 32 years of age, and he is close to the end of his Chelsea career, as his current contract at the club would expire at the end of this season. It is yet uncertain maybe he would stay at the club beyond the end of this season.

Chelsea would have to appoint a new captain to carry on the leadership of the club, sooner or later.

Now, we will be looking at the three players that could be candidates to become the next captain of the club after Cesar Azpilicueta.

Jorginho: Jorginho is the most obvious option that could be considered to replace Cesar Azpilicueta as the next captain of the club, as he already have great experience of being a leader at the club.

He is the current vice captain of the club, and has captained the club in some matches, he has also captained the Italian national team in some matches.

Jorginho is a spectacular player, he dictates the way the entire team plays from the midfield, and has incredible penalty taking skills.

But his future is uncertain at the club, as his current contract at the club is set to expire in the summer of 2023, the Chelsea midfielder could be eyeing a return back to Italy this summer, or wait for his contract to expire before he makes the move.

Ngolo Kante: Kante is one of the oldest player in the Chelsea current squad, and could be considered to become the next Chelsea captain.

Although, Ngolo Kante is not the type that is always talking on the pitch, but he could lead the team with his amazing performances in games.

Thiago Silva: Although, Silva is just in his second season with Chelsea, but he is one of the leadership figures in the dressing room. The 37 years old recently extended his current contract with Chelsea till the summer of 2023.

Silva has been exceptional good for Chelsea since he joined, and has the leadership qualities to become the next captain of the club, but only that it might not be for a long period, because he is already 37 years old, and there is no assurance that he would get another extension to his Chelsea contract beyond the summer of 2023.

Other captaincy options includes Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and Antonio Rudiger, but the German defender could be leaving Chelsea at the end of this season.
