Key Chelsea midfielder returns to training to boost Lampard’s attack

Chelsea’s depleted midfield is set to be reinforced somewhat with the news, reported by Football.London, that Mateo Kovacic has returned to training this week.

He limped off injured against Liverpool last week, leaving us seriously short handed in the middle given Jorginho’s suspension and N’Golo Kante’s fitness problems.

In his absence Billy Gilmour has stepped up and been superb, meaning there is no reason to rush the former Real Madrid man back to action. However, given Kovacic has been perhaps out best player this season, he will likely slot in again as soon as he’s fit.

Of course this will all be moot if the entire Premier League season is called off, something which appeared impossible even a few days ago and now seems actually quite probable.

UPDATE: It has been confirmed that Chelsea training did not take place today, so any progress Kovacic is making is likely to be put back by some time.
