Chelsea thought they had a major summer coming up, until the whole of football was put on pause.
After a year out of the transfer market, they secure Hakim Ziyech in January to arrive this summer. That seemed like it was going to be the first of many moves made to strengthen the squad. But now everything is up in the air.
On Goal.com, they quote from former Chelsea player Jiri Jarosik who is in full agreement that just Ajax creator Ziyech won’t be enough on his to improve this squad to a Champions League level on his own.
“They have become inconsistent which is something that comes with youth and the quality of the league. A lot of guys have come [back] from smaller clubs on loan to Chelsea. I think Chelsea will scout well ahead of the transfer window having not signed anyone yet,” the Czech midfielder says.
“I think they need more than one player in Hakim Ziyech because they need a bench that can help them compete for a title too. They need to be stronger to win the biggest games.”
He’s not wrong. Despite all the good progress the team has made we need top class additions too. We can’t just look at the young players as we’re developing as the future of the entire squad, they will only reach their potential if they have some top players alongside them and can compete for the top prizes.
Ziyech is the start, not the end of that process.
