Chelsea are still alive and kicking in the Champions League this season and as per the Mirror, they have been given a massive boost in winning the tournament.
UEFA are set to hold a series of meetings next week and one of the agendas in those meetings will be to discuss how to wrap up the Champions League as well as the Europa League.
As per the Mirror, the idea that is currently floating around is to wrap up the Champions League in a mini-tournament during the month of August when all the domestic leagues have been given a chance to finish their games.
The report claims: “UEFA could decide to play the Champions League as a mini tournament in August.
“European football’s governing body will discuss various plans during three crunch meetings next week with their prestige club tournament at the top of the agenda. “They are determined to press ahead with finishing the Champions League and Europa League but accept the games may have to come after domestic seasons are completed.
“That has opened the door for mini-tournaments for both competitions to be played out in August with the remaining games being played as one-off ties.“
Chelsea and Manchester City both still have outstanding second leg last 16 ties which adds to the complication but they will consider the mini-tournament to be played in one venue, potentially in Istanbul where the final was originally due to take place. ”It’s unclear what is the detailed blueprint for this proposed mini-tournament but since Chelsea still need to play the second leg in the Round of 16, this could be a huge boost for them.
Chelsea currently trail by an aggregate of 3-0 against Bayern Munich and if this plan is approved by UEFA then this deficit could be wiped out and the match could be played as one single knockout game.
This will immensely boost Chelsea and their hopes of progressing to the next round since playing for just 90 minutes would help Frank Lampard throw the kitchen sink at Bayern Munich
